AMD’s Fred Weber, Chief Technology Officer Computational Products Group for the second largest CPU developer said in an interview Monday that the company’s ninth generation processor may be ramped up using 90nm process – a process that is just around the corner from AMD.

“Our ninth generation processor is going to be designed for 90nm moving to 65nm, taking advantage of additional transistors [available when moving down to thinner technology, editor]” Weber said in an interview to EETimes.

In fact, AMD is currently designing multiply fabrication processes, including 65nm, 45nm and has some research works in respect to 20nm underway, we could understand from Weber’s speech. Transistors are fundamental part of every CPU architecture and are very complex to develop.

AMD is also expected to produce Opteron and Athlon 64 chips using 65nm technology too.

It was indicated earlier this year that the first samples of AMD K9 will be released in the second half of 2005, 3.5 years after the AMD showcased its early K8 processors. The 65nm process, however, will only be ready for the company with its Fab 36 that will begin sampling of the first 300mm wafers sometime in the very late 1H 2005.

Additionally, Mr. Weber repeated his main points of improving CPU performance, such as threaded architectures, chip level multiprocessing, higher clock-speed operation, huge caches, special extensions and so on.
