Advanced Micro Devices and Intel Corp., the world’s largest makers of microprocessors, confirmed Tuesday they had been shipping microprocessors with two processing engines for some time now. Intel Corp. has been shipping such chips for revenue, whereas AMD has been shipping test samples to system integrators and other partners.

Commercial Dual-Core Chips Left the Fab

“We’ve been shipping dual core Opteron processors to our customers and partners since January 31st,” an AMD’s spokesperson told X-bit labs.

“We will ship product for revenue on the day we launch,” the spokesman for Sunnyvale, California-based chipmaker said.

“We just passed an important milestone… Intel is shipping the Intel Pentium Processor Extreme Edition 840 running at 3.20GHz and Intel 955X Express Chipsets, Intel’s first dual-core processor-based platform, to our customers,” said Abhi Talwalkar, the general manager of Intel’s digital enterprise group at the IDF Spring show in Taipei, Taiwan.

Intel officially announced beginning of manufacturing of its dual-core Pentium chips on the 7th of February. The company said it had “completed initial production runs of dual-core processors”, which implies that Intel Corp. has been manufacturing dual-core chips for commercial shipments starting this February. Advanced Micro Devices claims it shipped the first test samples of its x86 dual-core central processing units on the 31st of January, 2005.

The claim by Intel mean that several computer makers have already received appropriate processors and will be able to ship their systems based on these chips when the world’s top chipmaker formally announces them. AMD said it did not want to talk for its partners about possible launch timeframes for the dual-core products.

It is unclear how many central processing units with two cores have been shipped by Intel so far, but actual supplies mean that the company might have received some additional revenues this quarter. Still, the overall impact of those revenues on the financial performance of the manufacturer is vague.

Neither Intel, nor AMD confirmed actual announcement date for the forthcoming dual-core products.

AMD’s Dual-Core Chips May Emerge on April 21, Intel’s – in May

Dell Inc. said on Monday its Dell Precision 380 workstation featuring Intel Pentium Extreme Edition dual-core processor with EM64T, 955X core-logic and ability to employ up to 8GB of DDR2 667MHz memory with ECC will be announced in the coming weeks. Earlier Intel’s president Paul Otellini said the company’s dual-core microprocessors will be available for end-users in May, 2005.

The dual-core server chips of Advanced Micro Devices are possibly slated to be introduced on the 21st of April during the company’s event in New York; some sources suggested that the first desktop dual-core microprocessors from AMD will be on the market by the end of June.

AMD plans to firstly unveil its server-aimed dual-core Opteron processors and then follow with desktop-oriented dual-core Athlon 64 chip in the second half of the year because it believes server applications will benefit from additional core more than desktop software, as server programs are typically tailored for machines running two or more processors. Intel intends to commercially release its desktop Pentium D and Pentium Extreme Edition chips in May with dual-engine Xeon processor for servers entering the market in early 2006.

Intel’s first dual-core processor that is expected to be formally introduced shortly and become available in May is Intel Pentium Extreme Edition 840 which runs at 3.20GHz, features the Hyper-Threading technology, which allows it to execute up to 4 threads in parallel, uses 800MHz processor system bus, integrate 2MB (1MB per core) L2 cache and utilizes LGA775 form-factor. Later during the year Intel Corp. will introduce dual-core Intel Pentium D processors that operate at 2.80GHz, 3.00GHz and 3.20GHz and do not feature Hyper-Threading capability. All desktop dual-core chips are expected to sport EM64T, Virtualization, XD bit as well as Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technologies. The volume of Intel's dual-core chips will not, according to a company's official, be significant in 2005, but is expected to be enough to meet the demand.

The probable prospective plan of Advanced Micro Devices suggests that AMD will launch AMD Opteron 200- and 800-series dual-core processors at 1.80GHz, 2.0GHz and 2.20GHz with 95W thermal design power (TDP) in the second quarter of 2005. In the third quarter of the year AMD is projected to release dual-core AMD Opteron 100-series chips at the clock-speeds mentioned above as well as low-power dual-core AMD Opteron products at 1.60GHz and 1.80GHz with TDP of 55W. AMD’s desktop dual-core chips are projected to run faster than dual-core AMD Opteron.
