Intel Slashes Pricing on Desktop, Mobile Processors.

Intel Corp. on Monday reduced pricing of its desktop and mobile microprocessors as well as Intel Centrino bundles by up to 34%. The slash comes prior to back-to-school season and emphasizes products that Intel expects to be popular among consumers this Fall: cost-effective desktop chips as well as mobile central processing units.

All Intel Celeron D processors – for both Socket 478 and Socket 775 infrastructures – became 5% - 14% cheaper. For instance, the top-of-the-range Intel Celeron D 351 chip, which functions at 3.20GHz and features EM64T capability, now costs $117, $10 less than before.

In addition, Intel also slashed prices on the majority of Intel Pentium M and Intel Celeron M processors for laptops. The reductions were in the range of 13% to 34%.

In addition, Intel made its Centrino bundles more affordable than before: now a package that includes an Intel Pentium M processor, an Intel chipset and an Intel wireless network controller costs from 10% to 31% less than before. For instance, a package with Intel Pentium M 770 (2.13GHz), Intel 915 GM chipset and Intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG controller now costs $488, down from $703.

Santa Clara, California-based Intel did not change pricing its Pentium processors for desktops and Xeon processors for servers and workstions.

Intel recently said that the demand for mobile processors was growing, but a more significant share of such chips was constituted by value processors, particular Intel Celeron M. With even more affordable Intel Celeron M processor the world’s largest chipmaker may see its share among notebook computer shipments soaring later this year.
