Advanced Micro Devices will introduce improved version of its low-cost Fusion platform for personal computers this quarter, the company said late on Thursday. The firm expects availability of the first systems powered by the code-named Brazos 2.0 platform this quarter and mass availability of similar PCs during the back-to-school (BTS) season.

"The introduction of Brazos 2.0 this quarter builds on the momentum. Thanks to many new features and improved performance and extended battery life, we have made it easy for customers to take advantage of these advancements by simplifying platform transitions and reducing their time to market. Trinity and Brazos 2.0 systems will be available globally this quarter and we expect broad availability for the key back-to-school period," said Rory Read, chief executive officer of Advanced Micro Devices, during quarterly conference call with financial analysts.

AMD has shipped over 30 million of Brazos chipsets - consisting of an accelerated processing unit and an I/O controller - so far and expects Brazos 2.0 to add new design wins. AMD claims there are record number of design wins with Brazos 2.0 and Trinity Fusion chips. Unfortunately, as the name implies, Brazos 2.0 is not something brand new, hence, it will not become a breakthrough for anyone: AMD, OEMs, end-users.

The Brazos 2.0 platform is based on accelerated processing unit with up to two Bobcat-class x86 cores, next-generation Radeon HD 7000 graphics adapter and a single-channel DDR3 memory controller. The new A68 Fusion controller hub (FCH) input/output controller (Hudson D3L) will bring support for USB 3.0 as well as Serial ATA-600 to AMD's ULV platform.

The Brazos 2.0 APU is supposed to be pin-to-pin compatible with FT1 infrastructure, but since A68 FCH utilizes 656-pin BGA package (instead of 605-pin that previous-generation A45 uses), manufacturers will have to slightly redesign their existing products for Brazos 2.0. On the one hand, AMD will relatively easily upgrade available entry-level Fusion-based machines, but on the other hand Deccan platform would enable thinner and sleeker designs and would improve competitive positions of AMD.

According to unofficial information, AMD readies several flavours of Brazos 2.0 offerings for netbooks, notebooks and nettops. For example, models E1-1200 (two cores at 1.40GHz, 1MB cache, Radeon HD 7310 graphics engine with 80 cores at 500MHz, 18W, etc.) and E2-1800 (two cores at 1.70GHz, 1MB cache, Radeon HD 7340 graphics engine with 80 cores at 680/523MHz, 18W, etc.) will target nettops and low-power notebooks.

A source familiar with AMD plans said once that AMD Brazos 2.0 was set to hit production stage by mid-February, 2012. Since the APU is made using "good-old" TSMC's 40nm process technology, the ramp up should be fairly quick.

yep that is disappointing - it would kick ass at 28nm

still, current ones do ~18 watts - not bad - 10 hrs use, & probably better & cheaper than an atom w/ ion graphics

am puzzled tho - was sure i read of a 28nm brazos for 2012

The single channel ram thing I just cannot understand. It doesnt seem nearly enough for a reasonable-ish CPU and reasonable-ish GPU.

Net appliances do not need dual channel. Single channel has been more than enough for ages. These are toys, not real PCs.

These are NOT toys, they work perfectly well for those that are using netbooks and laptops for the net and video, which is the vast majority of buyers BTW. Look at any B&M and you'll see AMD pretty much owns the sub $700 market and as someone who owns an E350 I can see why, i get over 6 hours watching HD video and over 7 web surfing, its a great chip.

What i don't understand is why they don't release a quad version as its low power would make it perfect for HTPCs and midrange laptops with a quad. As it is its a good HTPC if you are only playing back but to make it record you really need quad cores.

Brazos is 80mm^2 , $35 chip, with low-end cpu cores and very low-end gpu.

Second memory channel would raise it's price considerably, and it does not need second memory channel because it has so low-end chip; Single channel can feed the low-end cpu and gpu cores well.

The text about the GPU part is biggest marketing bullshit I've read for ages

That "next-generation radeon 7000 graphics adapter" happens in reality to be over two year old 5400 series low-end graphics adapter.
