Advanced Micro Devices on Monday introduced five new multi-core server microprocessors based on Bulldozer micro-architecture for 2-way and 4-way servers. The new Opteron central processing units slightly boost performance compared to previously available chips and are already utilized inside many servers by different vendors.

“Since the launch of our latest AMD Opteron processors based on our 'Bulldozer' core, we have seen steadily increasing demand for our high-end processors. The new additions to the AMD Opteron processor family, along with the latest offerings from HP and Dell, further strengthen our ability to offer greater choices to an agile and data-hungry base of enterprise and cloud customers," said Lisa Su, senior vice president and general manager of AMD global business units.

The five new processors, available today, tout a 100MHz performance advantage over their predecessors without any increase in power consumption. These additions underscore AMD’s commitment to create a broad portfolio of processor options for its customers, all of which offer superior price/performance. The new processors are:

AMD Opteron 6200-series processors:

  • AMD Opteron 6284 SE: 16-core 2.7GHz, 140W TDP, $1265
  • AMD Opteron 6278: 16-core 2.4 GHz, 115W TDP, $989

AMD Opteron 4200-series processors:

  • AMD Opteron 4276 HE: 8-core 2.6GHz, 65W TDP, $455
  • AMD Opteron 4240: 6-core 3.4GHz, 95W TDP, $316
  • AMD Opteron 4230: 6-core 2.9GHz, 65W TDP, $377

1.
maybe i should get this one:
AMD Opteron 6284 SE: 16-core 2.7GHz

it seems to be reasonable for my workstation running several Ubuntu virtual-box systems. in addition with 16 cores doing VDO ripping/editing should be a joy instead of a pain just waiting hours and hours for the rendering/ENCODING process.

Look through Spec results. The comparison of brand-new 12c Opteron 62xx versus old 12c Opteron 61xx is of special interest. And let's not forget that Opteron 62xx submissions have higher freq, faster memory and as well as more advanced compiler version and extended instruction set.
