Advanced Micro Devices is set to continue its restructuring efforts in the coming year, which will include further layoffs. Even though they are not projected to be significant, their incoming lowers the state of employee morale and encourages many old workers to leave AMD for other companies.
“All the old AMD street-fighters are gone, and a lot of them feel that Rory has made a big mistake in getting rid of them. Without them, people feel like they’re in a losing battle,” a source with knowledge of AMD’s situation told AllThingsD web-site.
AMD plans to lay off 15% of its workforce, or around 1700, this quarter to reduce operating costs so to reach $1.3 billion break-even point in 2013. Apparently, AMD will not stop here and will continue to reduce its headcount to reduce its costs. Unfortunately, AMD still does not know how many people will need to be shown the door. What should be noted is that AMD managers are waiting to see how many more people quit on their own accord between now and January – and thus do not require expensive severance packages.

“As we communicated during our third quarter earnings results, we expect to take further restructuring actions in the first half of 2013. At that time, we did not know what specifically they would consist of or if they would be material. We have not provided any updates since then and do not comment on rumor or speculation,” a statement by AMD reads.
Even though AMD will clearly lower its operating costs by reducing the headcount of its employees, without talented engineers, developers or sales people, the company will be unable to design competitive products or efficiently sell them. At the end, the firm will be even less competitive against Intel, Nvidia or other than it is today.

I actually feel bad for him. He probably has no friends and I bet his parents neglected him in early childhood. To create some meaning in his life, he decided to dedicate himself to anti-AMD propaganda. The irony is if AMD fails, he will have to find a new target to hate or once again he will feel empty inside.

Another Round of Reorganization??? LOL
I think the more proper definition would be project fail number 2.

Well said Anton, apparently some of them are having a hard time to figure that one out.

Yes Project Fail #2 and there will be more like it in 2013 when AMD goes into a downward spiral of DESTRUCTION. Yes AMD will be even less competitive than it was before read this:

What else do you do in the midst of the biggest financial crisis since the 1930s? Some people are going to have to join the bread line until things pick up. AMD, like any business, is not a charity. So the question is, when will the sackings at Intel begin when no one needs their iSomething-superclocked-CPU-for-favourable-benchmarks-with-added-Space-Invaders -graphics-chip-for-ultrabooks-running-WinOS-fail-8? AMD's woes are ominous for Intel. Intel shares will head south as the Titanic is unable to change direction quick enough. Captain Otellini has already abandoned ship. First class passengers will begin to sell shares before Christmas with a rush for the lifeboats in the new year.

The difference is that Intel has the money to position itself differently according to the crisis and to the markets that people go on different devices. AMD hasn't got the money.
Keep having your wild dreams "linuxlowdown".
Until this crisis is gone there would be nothing left from AMD. Getting into new unproven markets will not help them generate more money "now". Maybe in the future yes but it will be to late.

The board of directors should be taking pay-cuts instead of firing engineers and people who actually work on the products. It wasn't just RR that brought AMD to where it is today. The incompetent BoD has been destroying this company slowly for more than half a decade.

Whats up with the sudden shift of your attitude BestJinjo? What happened to the "AMD is heading in the right direction and is making the correct decisions"???
Don't worry BestJinjo, you will soon eat all of your words that you have been saying about AMD before.

But that won't happen RR was hired by the Board for the Board. RR was hired to make himself and the board even richer.

Exaclty RR is just executing what the Board says to him to do. Neither the Board or RR have a clue of what they are doing. The original plan was to eat the remaining wealth of AMD and to leave the carcass to rot.

I think they might just ditch the x86 license that they have since its not transferable, so i think they might be thinking for a sale also. You must not forget that AMD still has an old debt of 2 billion. They cannot sustain their expenses anymore so they might just leave the x86 behind. The sad thing is, something that i have been saying a long time ago that the graphics will be affected as well. All this is due RR stupid decisions he has broken the graphics team as well. The team that has brought success is no longer there. RR is so stubborn he destroyed everything good that those talented people had to offer and he has sunken everything. RR dreams will never be materialized because he never had or have a clue of what he is doing.

And you do, of course. That's why you command a $1,000,000 salary for your services. But what are you doing still living in a trailer park?

hey moron! the moment AMD announced that they plan to produce anything related to ARM is a sign of their inevitable exit from x86 market! Project Win or Project Lose or Project Fail, whatever you might call it is actually Project Exit - there eventual roll-off from x86. By then AMD has lost their identity and focus on their core product. The only thing that's keeping them afloat is the graphics division, which is managing to stay a bit competitive in its own market!

Let's hope that AMD will survive the next two years, and that the laid off employees found good jobs else where. It would be said to see all the talents wasted otherwise.
