Advanced Micro Devices not only demonstrated engineering sample of its code-named Kaveri accelerated processing unit running a technology demo, but before that it actually started to test the APU in real-world applications. In fact, back in late March AMD tried a Kaveri based-system in cosmology at home volunteer/grid computing application.

An occasional search for various microprocessor models by DresdenBoy revealed quad-core AMD Eng Sample: 2M186092H4467_23/18/12/05_1304 [Family 21 Model 48 Stepping 0] in Cosmology at Home database. It is believed that the chip runs at 1.80GHz default clock-speed, has 2.30GHz Turbo Core frequency and features code-named Spectre graphics processing engine operating at 500MHz clock-rate. The chip is believed to have 35W thermal design power.

The code-named Kaveri APUs are the first to integrate highly-anticipated Steamroller general-purpose x86 cores, hence there are anticipations for extreme performance in applications that rely on x86 processing. Unfortunately, due to very low clock-speeds, measured performance numbers in BOINC whetstone/dhrystone are rather low: 504.7 million ops/s and 2544.64 million ops/s, respectively.

The test system was only used once on March 19, 2013. Given the fact that the chip was an early sample based on stepping 0, it is hard to say whether Kaveri suffers from inability to run at high clock-rates, or is simply clocked at moderate frequencies in order to maintain stability.

AMD Fusion A-series APU code-named Kaveri is projected to feature up to four Steamroller high-performance x86 general-purpose cores as well as GCN architecture-based AMD Radeon HD graphics engine. The Kaveri chip will be AMD’s first high-performance accelerated processing unit with HSA [heterogeneous system architecture] enhancements, such as heterogeneous uniform memory access, CPU and GPU cache coherency and other. Moreover, Kaveri will be AMD’s first high-performance APUs made using 28nm process technology. Finally, the chips will feature new dual-channel memory controller as well as all-new power management.

As a result of massive changes inside Kaveri, the chips will feature new FM2+ form-factor and will only be compatible with new mainboards with FM2+ sockets, according to a new roadmap update issued by AMD. The new chips will therefore be incompatible with existing mainboards, which means that there will be no upgrade path for systems based on A-series “Trinity” and “Richland” APUs.

Given the fact that Kaveri will feature a number of “firsts” for AMD, a new socket was something logical to expect. What is unclear at this point is whether FM2+ mainboards will have any specific requirements and whether they will be more expensive than existing motherboards with FM2 sockets.

AMD did not comment on the news-story.

The performance numbers seem many times too slow so that there is something dramatically slowing this engineering sample down, it's propably running only single thread , or maybe L2 cache is turned off.

The bench is not from an official source or high profile leaker, so I would take it with a grain of salt and no more. If benchmarks turned up through the Phoronix Test Suit then it would be more interesting.

actually this picture referes to engg. sample same as with intel ivy bridge samples,ivybridge ES run less than 2ghz and performance was nowhere near to sandy bridge so don't be hopless, at launch time we will see around 2.4~2.6 quad core @ 35tdp same as core i5

core i5(and many i7) notebook cpu is dual core chip not quad core like desktop model, intel did that just to make people fool. mobile i5(and many i7) is actually unlocked i3. unlocked means all intel chips have ability of Hyper-Threading, Turbo-boost,advanced instructions but these all are disabled in i3 and enabled in i5(and many i7) just to make abruptly high profit.while in AMD even cheap A4 supports advanced instructions like AES.

Agreed. By even so, the latest quad AMD mobile A-10 5750M is so much weaker than a mobile i5...

I have my doubts with i5 they are just DUAL CORE !!!! and i7 quad core are 47-57W TDP !!!! that is just unusable in laptop.

making i5 dual-core is we can accept but giving i7 sticker on dual-core ONLY ONE WORD- "CHEATING" and intel is used to for doing such cheating.intel is even cheating to own consumers. almost 95% people buy moble i7 coz they think i7 means quad core.

frnd i m not completly agreed as its matter of what ur going to do on ur notebook in short if u have discreet gpu HD7670m+,GT640m+ than i5 is better but without discreet gpu intel i5 is nowhere near to AMD A10-5750m.

in 1st line at owner its written Trinity -
how anyone can say this is AMD kaveri not trinity. has xbit verified that with AMD? or another poor journalism like rumored AMD's 16core APU on steroids which xbit shown some time back which was copycatted from semiaccurate forum where a reader made that imaginary diagram and all tech site projected that rumored kaveri on steoriods.

The 'owner' field reveals nothing, but the CPU ID has been decoded by others to be likely Kaveri 35W.http://wccftech.com/amd-s...bionic-research-database/

We'll all know more some time in Q4 when AMD releases the desktop Kaveri APUs, which are not 35w models. The 35w and lower TDP are laptop models scheduled for release in Q1 of '14.

Thats not entirely true, both desktop and laptop are set to release in 2013, likely mid-November. The difference you might find is that desktop cpus may be available almost immediately by themselves and motherbaords, but the mobile will take a few months for OEMs to put them into a lot of laptops and test them for quality control.

AMD has released some info on the 35W Opteron chip that is 4 Steamroller cores and a GCN GPU, basically Kaveri with ECC. It is said to be around 700 GFLOPS, which is likley total including the CPU part, so the GPU is likely close to around 570 GFLOPS theoretical peak. While this will still dominate any normal i5 or i7 in overall performance for a budget notebook without a GPU, the 47W Haswell with Iris Pro that can go up to 55W may have a stronger gaming GPU. The desktop Kaveri parts will likely offer far superior value than any of the Haswell desktop parts.
