Advanced Micro Devices pins a lot of hopes onto its Steamroller micro-architecture as well as Kaveri accelerated processing unit since both could significantly improve competitive positions of the company. Unfortunately for the Sunnyvale, California-based chip designer, Kaveri, the first product to take advantage of Steamroller, could face delay in mass production.

AMD has implied that it is on-track to start shipments of its A-series “Kaveri” APUs in mass quantities sometimes in Q4 2013. However, the company will not be able to meet its schedules and will only provide “two A10 and one A8 APU pilot production samples” to its customers in December, reports DigiTimes web-site citing market rumours.

Sampling in December means that there will be no mass-produced Kaveri chips this calendar year and that actual products will likely reach the market towards the end of Q1 2014, or even early in Q2 2014. Given the fact that Kaveri was supposed to replace code-named Trinity APUs this summer, it is obvious that it faces massive delay. Kaveri is expected to be replaced by Carizo APU in 2015.

Also in late Q1 – early Q2 2014 the world’s second largest supplier of microprocessors is expected to release its code-named Mallins and Beema APUs based on second-generation Jaguar-based designs. Mallins and Beema are projected to be succeeded by code-named Nolan APUs in 2015.

 

AMD Fusion A-series APU code-named Kaveri is projected to feature up to four Steamroller high-performance x86 general-purpose cores as well as GCN architecture-based AMD Radeon HD graphics engine. The Kaveri chip will be AMD’s first high-performance accelerated processing unit with HSA [heterogeneous system architecture] enhancements, such as heterogeneous uniform memory access, CPU and GPU cache coherency and other. Moreover, Kaveri will be AMD’s first high-performance APUs made using 28nm process technology. Finally, the chips will feature new dual-channel memory controller as well as all-new power management.

As a result of massive changes inside Kaveri, the chips will feature new FM2+ form-factor and will only be compatible with new mainboards with FM2+ sockets, according to a new roadmap update issued by AMD. The new chips will therefore be incompatible with existing mainboards, which means that there will be no upgrade path for systems based on A-series “Trinity” and “Richland” APUs.

Given the fact that Kaveri will feature a number of “firsts” for AMD, a new socket was something logical to expect. What is unclear at this point is whether FM2+ mainboards will have any specific requirements and whether they will be more expensive than existing motherboards with FM2 sockets.

AMD did not comment on the news-story.

I don't believe the rumours. Lisa Su stated at Computex that OEMs had already sampled Kaveri "several months ago" and "it will be shipping in 2013". The quotes are found exactly at the 26:00 minute mark of her presentation - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ueHW0bJuZPQ

I suspect that Kaveri will be ready in time for Windows 8.1 (with HSA support) and Christmas stockings. This rumour of a delay follows on from the one last year that said Steamroller was cancelled. It was crap. And so is this one.

AMD can't afford these type of delays since Broadwell will be out at 14nm by Q4 2014. That means AMD's 28nm APUs will be going head-to-head against 14nm Core i3s. AMD is going to be behind 2 full nodes, which means they will have no chance at all to compete on margins due to higher manufacturing costs, performance/watt and CPU performance. With thin margins due to more expensive 28nm node, they'll continue to be lacking the necessary cash flows to increase R&D for future CPU/APU designs. Timely execution is critical to AMD's management's ability to try to turn the company around. Since GCN will have been out for 2.5 years by Q2 2014, it appears the firm is having issues with its Steamroller CPU architecture.

Nobody is going to line up in the middle of the night and buy those 14nm Core i3s.

Next gen consoles however... Is a different matter.

Hope AMD will use this delay to introduce also high end Kaveri APUs with 8GB of 256bit 4channel GDDR5 memory.

It's time for AMD to sacrifice their discrete Graphics Cards business and start making middle and high end APUs with 8GB of 256bit 4channel GDDR5, yes, sales of AMD discrete Graphics Cards will decrease but sales of APUs will increase dramatically and total Revenue for AMD will be much higher.

AMD by making middle and high end APU will put Nvidia and Intel on their knees as no one will buy expensive CPUs + GPUs when there will be much cheaper and less energy consuming APU with similar performance and enough for modern gaming. Only Extremely expensive GPUs like 1000usd Titan or Radeon HD 7990 can be better than APUs but it's a very small market.

Also high-end APUs will allow to use 8GB or more of fast GDDR5 memory when even 1000usd Titan can use only 6GB. So future games optimized for 8GB or more of fast GDDR5 will be much better comparing with current games optimized for maximum 2-3GB video cards.

So high-end APUs is a way to go for AMD!!!

Another rumour started by stock market manager to increase turnover of stock true or false does not matter so long as the number of shares traded increases. The price is not what these chaps want just increase in turnover of stocks. If anyone believes these rumours and or has the gall to regurgitate this b/s means it is a very slow news day.

If Kavaeri is delayed - IF - then it will be no different than the delay of Ivy Bridge and Haswell - both of which missed projected delivery dates. The market is very dynamic and products are brought to market as quickly as possible.

Kaveri is a huge step forward for the PC world and consumers so I don't think it will make any significant difference if they start shipping in Q4 of '13 or Q1/H2 of '14. Consumers will be buying them as fast as AMD can deliver them no matter when they arrive.

Intel did not get hurt by delaying Ivy Bridge and Haswell. These days, AMD is no competition to Intel, so Intel did not lose anything. Now Kavaeri is delayed, so AMD is going to be screwed to compete against Intel. AMD can not afford to delay any products. If Kavaeri is delay, AMD should discontinue 80x86 and change over the resources from 80x86 to ARM. AMD needs to hull ass to develop ARM processors or else AMD is going to lose in both areas. Qualcomm and Samsung is already has high performing ARM processors that hurt nVidia's ARM processor.
