Calxeda, a leading designer of server-class system-on-chips based on ARM architecture, on Monday added second 64-bit processor into the lineup. The new chip will fit into the same designs that currently utilize ECX-1000 and EXC-2000 system-on-chips, which will speed up their time to market and will make Calxeda a lot more competitive.
Code-named “Sarita”, the Calxeda SoC with a 64-bit ARM Cortex A57 complements the “Lago” platform that relies on ARMv8 architecture and features enhance fabric, but is pin-compatible with the ECX-1000 and new ECX-2000. This approach, a first in the industry, reduces development time and expense for Calxeda partners, accelerating the 64-bit ARM ecosystem and enabling customers to future-proof designs for three generations of rapid technology innovation.
Current-generation Calxeda server system-on-chips feature up to four ARM Cortex-A15 cores as well as integrated Calxeda Fleet Fabric, 10Gb Ethernet, as well as standard I/O controllers. The third-generation Lago platform features Calxeda’s third generation scaling features, called the Calxeda Fleet Services, to further automate and optimize common operations at massive scale. The enhanced fabric will also connect hundreds of thousands of nodes, with quality of service features and the ability to allocate and control resources. Lago is set to become available in 2014.

Given that a number of customers have already deployed systems with Fleet Fabric and EXC-1000 and ECX-2000 microprocessors, providing them an upgrade path is a good way to secure loyal customers for Calxeda.
