Advanced Micro Devices plans to lower prices on some of its accelerated processing units on September 1, 2014. The drops will not be significant and will unlikely make AMD more competitive in general. However, all price-cuts mean that systems based on AMD Fusion APUs will get more affordable. Unfortunately, AMD decided not to refresh its product lineup in general.

Based on the new price-list of AMD that will become effective on September 1, 2014, AMD will reduce pricing on select A-series APU models by 7% - 8%. The price-cuts will be generally applied to previous-generation Fusion products code-named Richland, the new-generation Kaveri APUs will not get any more affordable for some reason (with the exception of the A10-7700K, which will get 7% cheaper).

For some reason AMD decided not to introduce almost any new models to its lineup for the back-to-school season. While exact reasons for that are unclear, it is likely that AMD simply cannot significantly boost performance of its A-series chips without increasing its costs. Besides, the company and its customers may consider its lineup as competitive enough against arch-rival Intel.

The only two new chips that AMD will launch on the 1st of September are the Athlon X4 860K (four-cores, 3.70GHz/4.0GHz, 4MB L2 cache, no graphics core, 95W, FM2+) for $82 as well as the A4-7300 (two cores, up to 4.0GHz, 1MB L2, Radeon HD 8470D graphics with 192 stream processors, 65W TDP, FM2) for $39. The former chip will be the first graphics-free CPU for the FM2+ platform and may pose interest to overclockers (it will be interesting to learn how good overclockers Steamroller cores produced using general-purpose 28nm process technology without graphics engine are), whereas the latter APU belongs to previous-generation and is aimed at the low-end office PCs.

AMD did not comment on the news-story.
