As I read over at The Inquirer, new AMD Athlon XP processors will be officially announced on August 21. They claim that there will be two new CPUs released: 2400+ and 2600+. At the same time AMD’s officials refused to comment on the info at any rate.

The Taiwanese mainboard makers supporting very closely AMD Company told that the working frequency of the upcoming AMD CPUs would make 2.13GHz for the 2600+ and 2GHz for the 2400+. In other words AMD decided to use a new formula to calculate the processor rating from now on. The changes made to the formula are most probably connected with the fact that simple increase in the core clock frequency doesn’t provide any stable performance growth any more.

As you remember, the old rating formula looked as follows: Rating = 3 x Frequency / 2 – 500. The new formula used to calculate the rating for the upcoming Athlon XP 2400+ and 2600+ can be written as follows:

Rating = 3 x Frequency / 2 - 600

Despite the rumors none pf the coming CPUs will actually support 333MHz bus. At the same time some other sources claim that the new bus will still appear, though a bit later.

One of the key issues about the Athlon XP 2400+ and 2600+ processors is the fact that The Inquirer claims their heat dissipation will be much lower than that of the older Athlon XP processors based on Thoroughbred core. This way we dare assume that the new Athlon XP processors will be based on the new core revision, which we have already told you before in our news and articles.

I have to stress that this unexpected demarche of AMD’s is cased probably by the anticipated upsurge in the core clock frequency of the competing Pentium 4 CPUs from Intel. As you know, on August 26 Intel will announce Pentium 4 2.66GHz and 2.8GHz. That is why jumping ahead of Intel with the new processor announcement, AMD will have every right to feel the manufacturer of the fastest x86 processors for the good 3 working days.
