VR-Zone web-site published a couple of pictures that apparently are photographs of the forthcoming AMD Athlon XP processors based on Barton core.

The core of the CPU resembles the crystal of the Athlon XP “Thoroughbred”, but a little bit bigger due to 512KB of L2 cache memory compared to 256KB of the predecessor. The microprocessor is marked as AXDA1833DKT4D (AIUAA core stepping) what means that the device can work at 333MHz FSB and is equipped with 512KB of L2 cache. The model number may seem to be a bit strange and low, but given that it is an engineering sample, I can assume that 1833 is the actual core-clock frequency of this microprocessor.

I now wonder if AMD marks its Barton processors working at 1833MHz as 2800+ CPU. It seems so, because the first CPUs with Barton core were said to have 2800+ model number. I wonder if 333MHz FSB and 512KB of L2 cache can impact performance so substantially that the CPUs are able to compete with 1000MHz higher clocked Intel Pentium 4 microprocessors.
