Every hardware enthusiast knows that it is blind easy to unlock multiplier of AMD Athlon XP “Thoroughbred” processor in case it is locked at all. But we managed to find probably the simplest way of unlocking the multiplier. In order to perform it you will need nothing but a piece of thin and small wire and five minutes of spare time.
As you know, there are L3 bridges on every Athlon XP “Thoroughbred” processor to determine the multiplier of the CPU. In case we lock the last bridge, we unlock the multiplier. But in order to lock it we have to do something with the microprocessor itself what may cause us to lose the warranty. Therefore, in order to remain the processor unmodified, we have to cope with our mainboards. We may either get a mainboard that unlocks multiplier automatically, but it is not easy, as there are very few such products on the market and all of them are based on the expensive nForce2 core-logic, or we may try to modify our existing mainboard somehow.
In order to “teach” your mainboard to unlock the multiplier, take a piece of wire and lock two contacts in the Socket as shown on the picture below and that is it!
Very easy, don’t you think?
Of course, you can lock together two processor’s pins or close together two socket's pins on the backside of your mainboard as shown over here to get the same result, but I personally think that our way to unlock the Athlon XP “Thoroughbred” chips is the simplest.
The only thing I should point out is that only 5x to 12.5x multipliers are available after such mod. Well, overclockers surely do not need more :)

I have a Via Ga-7VTXH motherboard and a Athlon XP 1500+ chip.I have changed the multiplier settings on my motherboard to 11.5,which should then make my cpu Xp 1800 +.I added the wire.It still doesn't work.Still sees it as XP 1500 +.What should i do or what am i doing wrong?

Karpod - Please note the following critical information about your processor prior to any attempts at overclocking or unlocking the multiplier as not all Athlon's are designed the same.
• Model AMD Athlon XP 1500+
• Manufacturer AMD
• Core Name Palomino
• CPU Clock 1333MHz
• CPU System Bus 266MHz
• Socket/Slot Socket A
• Command Sets MMX / 3DNow! / SSE
• Package OPGA
• Cache 1 128K
• Cache 2 256K
• Clock Divider 1/1
• Architecture 32bit
• Technology 0.18micron
• Core Voltage 1.75V
• CPU I/O Voltage 3.3V
Please note that the original post is specific to the "Thoroughbred" CPUs!
This includes Athlon XP1700+ up to 2800+. Please keep in mind that there are also sub versions of this processor. Once more to further confuse the customer, the "Barton" core CPUs overlap the Thoroughbred processors and start at the 2500+. All Barton core based Athlons are 333mhz while the Thoroughbred series can be either 266mhz or 333mhz.
As a note, the Palomino cores require multiple level 1 traces in order to unlock the multiplier and this is considerably more risky as a novice to modding CPUs where the Thoroughbred cores only need the one level 3 trace.

And what about the "superlocked" durons ? How to unlock multiplier ?
