Pentium 4 1.6GHz Dropped Off the Hooks

Going on with the transition of the Pentium 4 family to 0.13micron technology, Intel little by little gets rid of older 0.18micron CPU models. This time the company announced the discontinuance program for their 0.18micron Pentium 4 1.6GHz in mPGA478 package. The boxed version of this processor stopped shipping on May 14. The tray version is available for ordering until September 6, 2002 and the last shipment will be effected on November 14, 2003.

In fact, Intel could have terminated the production of this CPU as soon as they started shipping Pentium 4 1.6A GHz (based on the 0.13micron Northwood core), as there is hardly a single reason why we should prefer 0.18micron Pentium 4 to 0.13micron one, if both are available for purchase. Just for your reference: the boxed mPGA Pentium 4 1.6GHz costs around $141 and boxed Pentium 4 1.6A GHz – around $147.
