The Pentium M processor appears to be a kind of a universal device. Intel already utilises it in various notebooks, has nothing against using it in desktop personal computers and now this article claims that the Santa Clara, California-based giant will also supply its chips for use with telecommunication equipment.
<%BANNER[article]%>Reportedly, Nokia Networks, QNX and Momentum Computer said they will use the Pentium M processors in communications devices quite soon. All three companies are now in process of designing the actual products.
In September 2002 Intel already unveiled its Low Voltage Xeon processor for use in communications market. The chip, however, typically consumes about 30W of energy, while the Pentium M processors consume from 12W typically about 24.5W of energy, allowing to design thinner systems and prove more dense solutions. Low Voltage Xeon 1.60GHz costs about $355 in 1000 unit quantities, the Pentium M processors can offer more performance and consume less energy, while their price varies from $257 to $625 depending on the model.
