AMD Cuts Prices On All Its CPUs.

AMD Day Continues

by Anton Shilov

AMD not only launched its Opteron processor today, but also lowered the prices on all its CPUs, what seems to be an even more important event for end-users, who are hardly going to acquire shiny new AMD Opteron-based systems. As we reported some weeks ago, price reduction was quite aggressive on the higher-end models, however, the lowest-end chips were phased out, hence, overall AMD’s ASP should grow a little bit compared to the previous period.

Take a look at the new prices on desktop AMD CPUs compared to Intel’s chips:

As you see, all AMD Athlon XP processors are now considerably cheaper than Intel's CPUs in 1000 units quantities, as a result, there will also be a serious difference between the same chips in retail. In late 2002 as well as earlier this year I pointed out that the difference in pricing between Intel and AMD microprocessors is negligible and sometimes AMD Athlon XP products cost more than competing solutions from Intel. Hopefully, from now the situation will be better for customers and CPUs from AMD will be considerably cheaper than Intel's solutions. Maybe AMD prepares for massive launch of Intel Pentium 4 with 800MHz Quad Pumped Bus processors later this year, and tries to make its CPUs more attractive with lower price? Anyway, before Intel cuts its prices in a month time, AMD processors will be substantially cheaper.

Talking about Celeron and lower-end Athlon XP processors, I can figure out that solutions from AMD also look better here given their lower price and higher performance. The only problem with low-cost Athlon XP-based systems is that there are very few cheap, but quality platforms for them.

AMD Athlon MP processors for 2-way workstations and servers also got a little bit cheaper today. With the introduction of Opteron processors for the same market segment, AMD's family of CPUs intended for 2-way servers and workstations looks as follows:

AMD’s positions on server and mobile market are not really strong or weak, but the success in those markets depends on quality platforms. In case there are some for servers and workstations, there are just one or two interesting solutions for mobile computers.
