AMD continues to restructure in order to reduce costs and improve efficiency of its execution. Recently the company said that it will form a division that will deal with microprocessor business, product planning, product management, product marketing and brand management as well as its customer and business development activities.

AMD Microprocessor Business Unit will be co-lead by Richard Heye and Marty Seyer, according to EE Times, and will consolidate two divisions from AMD’s Computational Products Group. The new unit will consist of 850 employees.

It is pretty hard to tell you what consequences the forming of the Microprocessor Business Unit may cause. Obviously, AMD’s marketing and execution may improve. It is a right time to do so - Opteron offers quite impressive speed in server applications, so, add there a aggressive marketing and maybe the company will return to profitability faster? Maybe there is a background here as well, but at this time it is hidden.
