As it was expected, AMD started to sell its Opteron processors right after the formal announcement on the 22nd of April. At the moment Opteron 240, 242 and 244 models are for sale nearly all around the world. The only problem with them is that there are very few mainboards for AMD x86-64 Socket 940 CPUs that is why even if you manage to buy a couple of new processors from AMD, you will hardly be able to utilise them until you get a mainboard.
<%BANNER[article]%>AMD Opteron 240 CPUs cost $305-$325 in the US and $320-$350 in Japan, Opteron 242 chips are priced at $707-$770 in the USA and $740- $800 in Japan, while the Opteron 244 CPUs will be yours for $850-$880 in the USA. As you see, the pricing of the chips is not really high, nevertheless, I doubt it is a good idea to acquire the CPUs now unless you can get a mainboard as well.
The only mainboard that is available in Japan is MSI K8D Master for something like $750. In the USA there are no mainboards for Socket 940 processors currently available.
