Looks like Advanced Micro Devices has solved some of its problems with frequencies of AMD Athlon 64 microprocessors. As The Inquirer reports, the number two CPU supplier in the world is preparing AMD Opteron 248 processor clocked at 2.20GHz launch. This seems pretty logical keeping in mind that later this month the company will also unveil Socket 940 Athlon 64 FX chips functioning at the same core-speed.
<%BANNER[article]%>Additionally, AMD will release AMD Opteron 146 (2.0GHz) CPU for 1-way workstation and servers on the 8th of September. I do not quite understand for what such processors will be needed after the 23rd of September because AMD says they are not capable of working in DP configurations, just like soon to be released AMD Athlon 64 FX CPUs. Given that there are no differences between Athlon 64 FX and Opteron 100-series, I believe that the only difference between the microprocessors will be in positioning and pricing.
The AMD Opteron 248 will probably be announced in late September or early October, right after the highly-anticipated AMD Athlon 64 lineup, I would suggest.
