Intel Xeon 1M at 3.20GHz to Debut Next Week

Intel Corporation is expected to unveil its new Xeon microprocessor for 2-way servers and workstations next Monday, unofficial sources said today. The new Xeon DP CPU will have 1MB of L3 cache and will be clocked at 3.20GHz. Its introduction at $851 price-point will not be followed by price reduction of the whole Intel Xeon DP lineup, since no Xeon DP price moves planned through Q1 2004.

The new Intel Xeon 1M processor at 3.20GHz will be compatible with existing Intel Xeon DP platforms that have 533MHz Quad Pumped Bus PSB – E7501 for servers and E7505 for workstations – the chip giant revealed recently. Debuting on the 6th of October, the Xeon 3.20GHz processor with 512KB of L2 and 1MB of L3 cache will be the most powerful Intel Xeon DP CPU based on the current design formerly known under “Prestonia” code-name. In the second quarter of 2004 Intel plans to launch its new Nocona processor featuring Prescott-like core, faster 800MHz Quad Pumped Bus and 1MB of L2 cache. The chips are expected to clock at 3.60GHz, even though current power consumption of the 90nm chips may lead Intel to lower the initial frequencies of its next-generation server chips.
