Intel Debuts Celeron 2.80GHz

The largest microprocessor maker in the world – Intel Corporation – today released its Celeron processor at 2.80GHz for value systems. The chip is expected to be the last processor to be introduced by the Santa Clara, California-based giant this year and also the very last Celeron CPU speed-grade made using 0.13 micron process technology.

Traditionally, Intel Celeron 2.80 processor uses 478-pin packaging, integrates 128KB of L2 cache and features 400MHz Quad Pumped Bus. The VCore of the newly released chip is 1.525V, its Thermal Design Power is 68.4W. The Intel Celeron 2.80GHz microprocessor is drop-in compatible with i845-, i865-series of chipsets and other similar platforms for Intel Socket 478 processors from companies like VIA, SiS or ATI Technologies.

2.80GHz is expected to be the last step for Northwood-128 core, as the 3.06GHz Celeron processor will already be based on the Prescott-256 core made using 90nm process technology to be uncovered early next year.

Intel Celeron processors based on the Prescott core with 256KB of L2 cache will work with higher-frequency Quad Pumped Bus of 533MHz. Those processors will also be compatible with practically all platforms for Socket 478 CPUs, moreover, Intel is set to add LGA775 chips into the lineup already in the first half of 2004 to promote its new PCI Express and DDR-II supporting core-logic across all market segments.

The Celeron processor at 2.80GHz is priced at $117 in 1000 unit quantities and is available now.
