Advanced Micro Devices today announced aggressive price-changes for its Opteron chips aimed at server market space: the company has slashed prices on almost all the units, making the chips a lot more affordable.

The reasons for the move are not fully clear, as server clients typically prefer to have a stock of chips that do not get cheaper very oftern. This allows server system integrators to offer variety of servers without worrying about price competition with other manufacturers of server PCs, who buy microprocessors after massive price slashes.

Today’s price reduction is pretty serious across the whole line of AMD Opteron SKUs, including the most expensive 800-series designed to work in multiprocessor machines.

AMD usually does not comment on price moves.
