Intel to Disclose Peculiarities of Next-Generation Processors at IDF

Intel Corp. will reveal details concerning the company’s next-generation central processing unit architecture at its upcoming Intel Developer Forum, various media sources report. Intel’s list of planned session does not include any special panels concerning the next-gen architecture, however, they seem to cover certain peculiarities of future chips.

The new chips will start to emerge in the second half of 2006 and sport, among other attributes, greater energy efficiency and better manageability. The chips are code-named Merom (for notebooks), Conroe (for desktops) and Woodcrest (for servers), notes CNET News.com web-site.

It is expected that Paul Otellini will reveal the details about the mentioned processors during opening of the IDF on the 23^rd of August, 2004. Intel’s web-site, however, claims that the company’s chief  will “outline his vision for the company and discuss market opportunities and trends such as the move to mobility, the retooling of the digital home, and the digital end-to-end enterprise”. It is said that he well “explain the significance of underlying technology trends such as the shift to multi-core and WiMAX that will enable great opportunities for the entire developer ecosystem.

Earlier this year Intel confirmed that processors code-named Merom, Conroe and Woodcrest would not be based on the NetBurst architecture that powers current Intel Pentium 4 chips. Besides new architecture, which is expected to feature shorter pipeline and high performance per clock, the chips will also sport capabilities like virtualization capabilities, LaGrande technology, 64-bit capability in addition to EDB, EIST and iAMT2.

Intel representatives did not comment on the news-story.
