AMD Unleashes Piledriver-Based Opteron 4300 and 3300 Processor Families

AMD Introduces New Opteron Chips for 1P and 2P Servers

Advanced Micro Devices on Tuesday released its new server-class microprocessors based on Piledriver micro-architecture that will be used inside machines with one or two processors. AMD positions its nine new chips as ideal for cloud providers and web hosts. The new chips will complement existing Opteron 6300-series server products as well as FX-series high-end desktop solutions.

 

“The Piledriver core architecture shared by the AMD Opteron 4300 and 3300 series processors provides optimized performance, power and price for today’s customer. These new processors are ideal for cloud providers, web hosts and small- and medium-sized businesses who want to address their space and power constraints. With a simple upgrade, existing customers can obtain more performance and improved energy efficiency and new customers will obtain compelling value and ROI,” said Suresh Gopalakrishnan, general manager of server business unit at AMD.

The AMD Opteron 4300- and 3300-series processors offer up to 15% percent better performance versus the prior generation, central processing units based on SPECint benchmark results, whereas SPECpower results show up to a 24% improvement in performance per watt. The new chips are drop-in compatible with previous-generation platforms, providing an effortless upgrade path for customers.

Thanks to Piledriver architecture, the new multi-core microprocessors can operate at up to 3.10GHz/3.80GHz (regular/turbo) clock-speeds while sustaining typical thermal design power of up to 95W.

Servers based on the new chips will become available later this year from various manufacturers, including Dell, Supermicro and SeaMicro.
