Samsung Launches New Exynos 5 Octa Processor with Eight Cores, Extreme Performance Graphics

Samsung Exynos Octa 5420 Packs Eight Big.Little ARM Cortex Cores, 48 Graphics Stream Processors

Samsung Electronics on Tuesday introduced its new Exynos 5-series microprocessor aimed at high-performance media tablets. The new system-on-chip packs eight general-purpose ARM Cortex cores in Big.Little configuration as well as an unprecedented graphics processing unit. The new application processor also boasts incredible compute performance, which will greatly improve new mobile programs.

 

The newest Exynos 5 Octa 5420 processor is powered by four ARM Cortex-A15 processors at 1.8GHz with four additional Cortex-A7 cores at 1.3GHz in a Big.Little processing implementation, which should enable 20% performance improvement over the predecessor by optimizing the power-saving design. The system-on-chip features six-cluster ARM Mali-T628 GPU with 48 stream processors in total, which improves performance in graphics applications by two times over predecessor. The new Exynos 5 Octa processor features a memory bandwidth of 14.9GB/s paired with a dual-channel LPDDR3 at 933MHz. This new processor also incorporates a variety of full HD 60 frames per second video hardware codec engines for 1080p video recording and playback.

The new Exynos 5420 product also supports OpenGL ES 3.0 and Full Profile Open CL 1.1, which enables the horsepower needed in multi-layer rendering of high-end, complex gaming scenarios, post-processing and sharing of photos and video, as well as general high-function multi-tasking operations.

"Demand for richer graphic experiences is growing rapidly nowadays. In order to meet that demand from both OEMs and end users, we developed this processor which enables superb graphical performance without compromising power consumption," said Taehoon Kim, vice president of system LSI marketing at Samsung Electronics.

The new family of Exynos 5 Octa is currently sampling to customers and is scheduled for mass-production in August.
