AMD Aims Hybrid PCs with New “Elite” Quad-Core Chip with 3W – 8W Power Consumption

Advanced Micro Devices has announced a new accelerated processing units for business tablets, hybrid devices and low-power/low-cost notebooks that has power consumption between 3W and 8W. The new A4-1350 chip is a more affordable version of existing A6-1450 solution that broadens the lineup of APUs based on Jaguar micro-architecture.

 

AMD A4-1350 accelerated processing unit features four Jaguar” x86 central processing unit (CPU) cores with 1GHz clock-rate, AMD Radeon HD 8210 graphics engine with 128 stream processors (GCN architecture) with 300MHz frequency, 2MB L2 cache as well as single-channel DDR3 memory controller. The AMD Elite quad-core A4-1350 accelerated processor is the second quad-core accelerated processing unit (APU) with an estimated average power at or below 3W for many common use cases as well as 8W thermal design power. The new chip is a lower-cost version of already announced quad-core A6-1450 APU that features dynamic frequency boost capabilities.

With quad-core performance, AMD Radeon™ HD graphics and long battery life, the A4-1350 is an ideal solution for new form factors like hybrid and convertible PCs,” said Bernd Lienhard, corporate vice president of AMD client business unit.

Although AMD Elite A4 and A6 accelerated processing units with 3W – 8W power consumption can power various hybrid PC designs, at present they are only found inside various low-power/low-cost notebooks, including the HP Pavilion TouchSmart and the Acer Aspire V5.

The AMD A4-1350 APU is expected to begin shipping to customers in October 2013 for use in small-screen touch notebooks, tablets, and hybrids with up to 13” displays.
