Nvidia Corp. has updated its family of graphics processing units (GPUs) aimed at mobile computers with several new solutions. The new products do not bring any substantial performance benefits as they are still based on the G92b chip and have nothing to do with the firms latest GT200 processors. Nevertheless, the flagship GPU has all chances to become highest-performing mobile graphics chip on the market.

“These new Nvidia GeForce GPUs are for those who won’t accept compromise in notebook performance. These new GPUs meet the needs of the most demanding consumers in the marketplace by delivering industry-leading performance at all price segments along with features that go beyond graphics,” said Rene Haas, general manager of notebook business at Nvidia.

The new line of mobile GPUs from Nvidia includes GeForce GTX 280M and 260M solutions based on G92b chips made using 55nm process technology with 128 stream processors and 112 stream processors, respectively, as well as 256-bit memory controller. In addition, Nvidia unveiled GeForce GTS 160M and 150M products powered by G94b (also produced at 55nm node) with 64 stream processors with 256-bit memory controller.

Considering specs and the fact that Nvidia uses graphics processors that are over one year old, the new mobile GPUs from Nvidia can be considered as re-branded GeForce 9M solutions.

The new graphics processors support DirectX 10 and OpenGL 3.0 capabilities, hardware accelerated playback of high-definition video, power saving features as well as other technologies currently supported by Nvidia GeForce hardware, such as PhysX and so on.

Asustek Computer, Clevo and MSI are all showing notebooks based on the new GeForce GTX 200M and GeForce GTS 100M series GPUs at CeBIT.
