Back in the past, when new generation game consoles arrived, they offered similar of better performance than advanced personal computers. When the next-gen PlayStation 4 and Xbox One emerge later this year, hardware inside them will be similar to mainstream PCs, which are not generally considered as gaming machines. While the consoles have a number of advantages over PCs, an Nvidia Corp.’s vice president believes that in the future PCs will always remain ahead.

“It is no longer possible for a console to be a better or more capable graphics platform than the PC. I will tell you why. […] Nvidia spends $1.5 billion per year on research and development in graphics, every year, and in the course of a console’s lifecycle we will spend over 10 billion dollars into graphics research. Sony and Microsoft simply cannot afford to spend that kind of money. […] Everything is limited by power these days. If you want to go faster, you need a more efficient design or a bigger power supply. […] The consoles have power budgets of only 200W or 300W. […] [They are] always going to be less capable than a PC, where we spend 250W just on the GPU. There is no way a 200W Xbox is going to be beat a 1000W PC,” said Tony Tamasi, senior vice president of Nvidia, in an interview with PC PowerPlay web-site.

While Mr. Tamasi is absolutely right that even next-generation Microsoft Xbox One and Sony PlayStation 4 video game systems will not have the same amount of graphics and general-purpose processing horsepower as currently available personal computers, several things should be kept in mind. The forthcoming consoles will cost $399 - $499 and will last for many years; by contrast, modern graphics card for $499 will be outdated in a couple of years. Truly high-end PCs cost well over $1000 per box (in fact, a 1000W PC can cost $3000 - $4000 and more), quite naturally they provide numerous advantages; unfortunately, not all PC users can afford such high-end systems in order to play games.

It is true that processing horsepower conditions quality of gameplay in case of modern titles. The better the microprocessor and graphics processor, the more immersive gameplay will be thanks to quality graphics, realistic physics and high framerates. However, it should be noted that modern PCs have a number of performance bottlenecks that prevent the hardware from showing all of its benefits. By contrast, Microsoft Xbox One and Sony PlayStation 4 have tweaked hardware and special-purpose software architectures, which are projected to boost their actual performance when compared to similarly configured PCs.

Although it is obvious that high-end PCs and next-generation personal computers are more capable than Microsoft Xbox One and Sony PlayStation 4 in terms of hardware performance, the question is when majority of PC games become dramatically more impressive than titles designed for these consoles. Given the fact that the absolute majority of games are designed for consoles and then ported to PCs, that moment seems to be pretty far away, except for certain advanced AAA titles.

1. 
Nvidia has no market in consoles, so this is normal. Off course if you ask them about ARM platform the story they will tell, will be the total opposite. There, you would hear how a low wattage machine can compete with a power hungry PC.

But what Nvidia fears the most is Mantle and Mantle would succeed only if consoles succeed. So they will do everything they can to make consoles look bad.

Have you actually checked performance comparisons? Put any PC game into the same quality as a game console with a core i3 and low power graphics card (think 650 or 7750 undervolted and underclocked), and you can easily use less power than the original PS3, and if you swap it out for high end mobile chips, you can have the same quality for half the power.

As for Mantle, it's not much different than CUDA when you get down to it, so all they will need to do is convince programmers to use CUDA for graphics as well.

U hv any idea wat u saying ,,,can u plz elaborate how to use cuda at place of mentle how u fit textures in ram,vram,cpu core utilization, timing all this better than mentle with more productivity than mentle..................if u don't know then plz don't post such stupid comments.

CUDA supports shaders, in addition to treating all memory like textures. CUDA is an even lower level interface than Mantle (no e in Man) that has the ability to be molded into anything you need given proper optimization. Just look it up if you want to do something other than troll like an idiot.

nvidia is just try to hide their failure by passing such statements, well its ok they r right ps4 has less than 2TFlops while the king is R9 290X at 5TFlops killing nvidia's 1000$ "baby titan" in almost half price tag.

can nvidia give in written that GTX 680 will run every PS4 game launched in 2016 better than PS4 no they can't coz in 2015 amd will unlock hsa capability.

and this is not end of the story we all know that R9 290x is true titan killer .....ok,,,but amd has nvidia killer also yes nvidia killer i.e. amd mentle api

The PS3, which has Nvidia graphics, launched half a decade ago has 1.8TFLOP, so "less than 2TFLOP" means the PS4 is on par with the PS3! (most people list 1.84TFLOP for PS4)
So basically you'll end up spending twice as much for 2% better graphics.

Directx vs amd mentle-
mental is basically an api similar to directx,it can do wat dx does but much better,,,i consider amd mantle as substitute of dx why-
1. directx works with different type of hardwares like gpu from amd,intel,nvidia each having complerly different design so its impossible to tune api for specific compny's design another problem is every compny hv many architechures like amd hv gcn,vliw4,vliw5 intel hv hd3000,hd 4000.
2. everyone knows that any AAA game running on console requires 5X to 10X stronger pc config why,,coz of directx yes directx can't utilize full potential of cpu,gpu while console suck even last drop of performance,reason behind this is directx is a high level api while amd mantle is low level (same used in console) in simple amd mentle gives full control over hw like devs can directly access to vram,cores,cpu cores,cpu cache which is impossible in directx even devs can't access vram in dx.
3. low level api like amd mentle is the biggest secret of consoles performance, just see crysis 3 runs beautiful on 2005's x360.
4. another big point in directx is bribe yes intel pays MS for not giving full directx support to amd modular cpu design similarly nvidia also pays for better optimizen for their design, that's why amd gpu hv highest computational power but performs equal to nvdia gpu,,,,believe it or not but its true.
5. so wat amd mentle will give finally-better utilization amd cpu(significant performance boost) without auto-overclocking so less power consumption on other side ground breaking performance boost in gpu's yes with amd mentle hd 7770 will beat hd 7870 using directx coz mentle will use every last drop of gpu.

Point 4. is new to me mudi1, but does not surprise me in the least. Intel pulls out all stops to protect its monopoly to the detriment of consumers. Microsoft has also been complicit with these activities in the past. NO ONE CAN DENY THIS.

2 is flat out false because the dx11 overhead is at most 2x, usually far less. The reason why major games require faster GPUs (not computers, since CPU requirements are tiny) is because they tend to render the graphics at twice the resolution with twice the polygon count and four times the texture resolution. If you set BF3 to 720p, which higher than ps3/xbox360's 1280x704, you can even use integrated graphics and stay above 30fps! Don't tell me intel's IGP is faster than a ps3.

As far as I've read the forums it seems that Mantle will NOT be closed source, so even nVidia or Intel can optimise the GPU/CPU for it. Anyways, this will remain to be seen how successful this will be.
First trial: BF4 will come with Mantle libraries not just Direct3D ones. Also x64 executables for video cards with more than 4GB of VRAM.

It will not stop Intel nor Nvidia from making their own Decompiler and Compiler for Mantle API.

However, depending on the quality of the Decompiler and Compiler, a significant amount of efficiency will be loss.
