Graphics Solutions Market in Q2 2003: ATI and Intel Attack!

We received more figures from Mercury Research concerning graphics solutions market performance in the second quarter of 2003. Below you will find what we managed to dig today.


The total graphics market, including desktop standalone, desktop integrated, portable standalone and portable integrated graphics devices as well as workstation products and mobile workstation products was a little bit down compared to the first quarter 2003. Total shipments accounted for rougly 49 million of units, according to sources.

Intel appeared to be biggest winner of market share in the second quarter with 32%, up 5 points from 27% in the Q1 2003. Total shipments of NVIDIA Corporation’s declined slightly to 27% from 31% in the first quarter. ATI Technologies gained 1 point and now its share among all graphics products shipped in the second quarter accounts for 21%. Other suppliers of graphics products, namely SiS/XGI, 3Dlabs, Matrox Graphics, Trident and S3 Graphics/VIA, either lost less than 1% or stayed flat with the Q1 2003.

As reported yesterday, NVIDIA has 64% of the total standalone GPUs for desktop computers market, flat with the Q1, just like ATI Technologies with its 28%. Other suppliers’ shares obviously remained unchanged.

Given that NVIDIA lost a part of mobile standalone graphics chips market, it also lost 3% of total standalone graphics processors market (includes discrete solutions for mobile and desktop computers), whereas ATI Technologies gained 2%. Currently NVIDIA has 54% of the market, while 37% are occupied by ATI.

The 68% of mobile graphics solutions were shipped by ATI Technologies during the quarter. As indicated earlier, ATI Technologies’ boosted its presence in the market of standalone GPUs for mobile computers by shipping 59% of all mobile graphics chips. NVIDIA’s share in the same market is 11%.

Desktop Integrated market was dominated by Intel, just like the mobile integrated segment. ATI's market share in mobile integrated segment is more than 30%.

Obviously, NVIDIA’s market share in DirectX 9.0 market segment may be even larger than 60%, as indicated yesterday, because the company shipped dozens of its GeForce FX 5200 GPUs into the entry-level market substituting the outdated GeForce4 MX solutions. In the second quarter, however, there were very few high-end and performance mainstream DirectX 9.0-supporting graphics processors from the Santa Clara, California-based company, as a result, I believe that the vast majority of high-speed DirectX 9.0-compliant graphics cards was still shipped by ATI Technologies. Based on the rising gross-margins and sales of the Markham, Ontario-based VPU company amid very modest growth in terms of market shares I also assume that the company has been winning a lot of performance mainstream and high-end market space from the rival.
