Yesterday we informed you that ASUSTeK computer is likely to abolish or postpone its VIA KT400A mainboard (see this news-story), while today our Taiwanese sources said that ABIT will also abandon its product powered by this Socket A chipset from VIA Technologies.
The KT400A chipset from VIA Technologies will be the only core-logic from this company that remain on the top position for about a month or two. That is why not a lot of mainboard makers want to cope with it even despite of the fact that VIA Technologies claims its KT400A North Bridge to be compatible with KT400 North Bridge.
With a lot of concerns about AMD CPU market share after Intel launches its Pentium 4 processors with 800MHz Quad Pumped Bus and the Hyper-Threading technology support mainboard makers may be conservative in regards higher-end platforms for AMD Athlon XP processors.
VIA KT600 that is expected to come in late April or early March will offer 200MHz EV-6 FSB support in addition to 166MHz system bus supported by VIA KT400A and VIA KT400. It worth to mention that the KT400A only offers slight performance improvement and Serial ATA-150 support over the previous-generation KT400 chipset.
Possibly fiasco of VIA KT400A core-logic may mean that mainboard makers are tired of “pseudo-new” chipsets coming out every quarter. Even though this can improve sales, it also sometimes impacts negatively, when manufacturers do not have enough time for selling the products before the new lineup shows up. We expect all chipset designers, including VIA Technologies, to be more careful with unveiling similar core-logic products during short timeframes later this year.
