In a bid to increase sales of its platforms consisting of central processing units (CPUs) and chipsets, Advanced Micro Devices plans to release two new core-logic sets with built-in graphics cores in the next three quarters. Such a roadmap seems to be a pretty accelerated one as usually chipset developers tend to update their low-cost and mainstream offerings only once a year.

Within the next nine month, AMD plans to unveil two generations of its own-brand chipsets – AMD 740G and AMD 780-series products. The novelties are going to sport a number of new features and, given that they will be from AMD itself, it is highly likely that they are going to gain popularity among system makers.

AMD 740G core-logic is projected to feature a new DirectX 9.0-compliant graphics core with Avivo engine as well as PCI Express x16 and PCI Express x4 interfaces in the north bridge. The new chipset will be mass-produced in Q3 2007 and will be coupled with the current-generation SB600 I/O controller.

AMD 780-series core-logic will feature HyperTransport 3.0 bus for CPUs, PCI Express 2.0 x16 and x1 for add-on cards and DirectX 10-compliant graphics core with universal video decoder (UVD) engine as well as D-Sub, DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort outputs. The chipset will be released to mass production in Q1 2008 and mainboards on its based may feature new-generation SB700 I/O controller.

The more powerful graphics cores are crucial for AMD to win market share from Intel Corp. in the mainstream and low-cost market space, as Intel is not known for high-performance graphics cores and demand towards more powerful integrated graphics processing units may spur popularity of systems featuring processors and chipsets from AMD. Besides, the chipmaker’s partner Nvidia Corp. is knocking the doors with its chipset that supports DirectX 10-compatible graphics core already in Q4 2007, which means that AMD’s own-brand chipset sales may get down at that timeframe.
