Via Technologies, a developer of microprocessors, graphics chips and core-logic sets, has announced a new platform that should enable feature-rich multimedia systems with very low power consumption. The new “Trinity” platform will utilize mini-ITX 2.0 form-factor, Via Nano processor, S3 Graphics’ graphics processing unit as well as a Via core-logic.

“With Mini-ITX 2.0, we declared that small form factor meant no compromise on essential technologies or performance. The Via Trinity platform is a natural extension of that philosophy for ultra compact systems. This platform leverages Via’ long-standing expertise in shrinking the form factor to deliver a truly high definition experience in small devices, perfect for a variety of lifestyles and applications,” said Richard Brown, vice president of marketing at Via Technologies.

Via Trinity platform comprises three chips: Via Nano or Via C7 central processing unit (CPU), Via VX800 single-chip core-logic as well as Via Chrome 500-series, 400-series or 20-series graphics processing unit (GPU).

The S3 Graphics Chrome 400- and 500-series graphics chips support the latest DirectX 10.1 and OpenGL application programming interfaces, feature hardware decoding of high-definition videos in H.264, MPEG-4, VC-1, WMV-HD and AVS formats, which makes them suitable for multimedia systems or home-theater personal computers (HTPCs). Meanwhile, performance of Via Nano should be enough for basic tasks.

The introduction of Via Trinity is another example of growing importance of computing platforms. Obviously, separately neither Via Nano CPU nor S3 Graphics Chrome GPU can compete against offerings from companies like Advanced Micro Devices, Intel Corp. or Nvidia Corp in terms of performance. But when the chips are sold as a solution for HTPCs or low-cost energy-saving multimedia systems, they may pose certain interest.

Despite of the fact that Via’s Trinity seems to have potential, so far no computer maker announced its support.

1.
But will Via price this platform at a reasonable cost or will they price themselves out of the market as they have done in the past
