Intel Corp. has initiated shipments of correct versions of its Cougar Point chipset for Sandy Bridge processors. Leading manufacturers of mainboards and notebooks have reportedly received the B3 stepping of the core-logic and will be able to install it shortly.

Officially, Intel initiated shipments of P67 and H67 B3 stepping core-logic on the 14th of February, 2011. On Friday sources close to leading makers of mainboards confirmed to DigiTimes web-site that the new chips had been received and were ready to be used for production of mainboards or notebooks.

In January Intel discovered a design issue in the Intel 6-series, code-named Cougar Point, and has implemented a silicon fix. In some cases, the Serial ATA-300 ports within the chipsets may degrade over time, potentially impacting the performance or functionality of SATA-linked devices such as hard disk drives and optical disc drives. The two SATA-600 ports are unaffected. Intel has stopped shipment of the affected support chip and so did its partners, who halted shipments of systems featuring the core-logic.

Intel and its partners did not comment on the news-story.

Let's hope motherboard manufacturers will append a suffix to their model numbers to that we can be certain that we are getting the new chipset.
