Thanks to massive design win with Apple with the Nvidia GeForce 9400M core-logic (also known as Ion) last Fall, Nvidia Corp. managed to massively improve sales of its core-logic sets compatible with microprocessors from Intel Corp. Apparently, Apple consumes over 50% of Ion sales, Nvidia said.
“Who are the fastest growing PC companies are in the world? I think that is Apple, Acer and Asustek, they are all huge Ion customers. […] Apple represents a little bit north of 50% of that,” said Jen-Hsun Huang, president and chief executive officer of Nvidia, during a conference call with financial analysts.
It is interesting to note that Asustek Computer has not announced any netbooks powered by Nvidia GeForce 9400M/Ion chipset. The company does have notebooks featuring GeForce 9400M, however, they are hardly bestsellers, given current state of economy as well as relatively low market share of non-Intel laptops. Therefore, if Asustek is increasing acquisition of Ion acquisition, it may be preparing a netbook or nettop featuring the Nvidia core-logic.
Sales of Nvidia chipsets accounted for $185.97 million and represented 28% of the company’s revenue ($664.2 million) during the quarter of Nvidia’s fiscal 2010, up approximately 94% quarter-over-quarter.
“Demand was primarily driven by our chipset products designed for the mainstream AMD integrated desktop segment, as well as our chipset products designed for the Intel-based notebook segment,” said David White, chief financial officer of Nvidia, during the conversation with the analysts.
According to Nvidia, sales of the GeForce 9400M/Ion chipset accounted for around 66% of all core-logic revenues for the quarter.
