Micron Technology demonstrated their DDR-II SDRAM chips at VIA Technology Forum 2002 on Monday in Taipei. The chips run at 533MHz and can provide peak theoretical throughput of roughly 4.2GB/s. Micron is the third memory maker that showcased DDR-II SDRAM products.

The company demonstrated a 256-Mbit, 1.8-volt test chip running at 533MHz speed. The company has not released samples of the DDR-II chips, but said at least one chipset vendor and one OEM are working with Micron to develop hardware. Micron expects the chip to ramp in late 2003, at 512-Mbit densities. Keeping in mind that the demonstration happened at VIA Technology Forum, we can easily conclude that the mysterious “chipset vendor” is VIA Technologies itself, while “an OEM” can be their VIA VPSD division that sells mainboards.

Earlier this year Elpida and Samsung said they were able to sample DDR-II chips and had even released some documents and specifications for developers of integrated circuits, especially chipsets. Both companies have already started sampling their DDR-II products. Micron is going to sample their DDR-II chip in the second quarter 2003. The new standard will come out not earlier than in late third quarter of 2003.
