According to Japanese newspapers Elpida and Intel are now in final talks about Intel’s possible investment in the joint venture between Hitachi and NEC. The information looks logical as the first rumours about Intel’s intention to invest in the Japanese DRAM memory maker appeared in September last year and by now both companies should have come to an agreement, of course, if there were any kinds of negotiations at all.

Reportedly Intel wants to acquire 10-20% stake in Elpida, or, to invest about $169 to $304 million. The Japanese number one memory maker needs additional funds to expand its manufacturing capacities, though, it is estimated that the company needs to find about $586.66 million, hence, it is not clear who is going to be the second investor, if any. The deal with Intel will be signed before the end of March 2003.
