Powerchip Semiconductor Corporation (PSC) will soon begin to market its DRAM chips under its own brand-name, Taiwanese media-sources reported today. According to preliminary estimates, memory chips sold under PSC brand may account up to 40% of total output of the company.

Earlier this year PSC and Elpida Memory signed sales and purchasing contract agreements solidifying their strategic alliance. Under the terms of the agreement, Elpida will buy up to 50% of PSC’s output and will provide the Taiwanese memory maker process technologies for DRAM chips (see this news-story for more details on the matter). In addition, in late March the company announced its plans to double its market share this year (see this news-story), so, the move to sell certain amount of DRAMs under PSC brand seems to be reasonable, especially considering the fact that the margins may improve when selling such products.

The company hopes to distribute its memory chips mostly in Europe, Taiwan and China. Due to some reasons, PSC does not plan to market its DRAM chips and modules in the USA. Currently there are no finalized plans, so, everything may change.

PSC is on time with its own DRAM chips on the market since Hynix Semiconductor may soon be thrown-out of all DRAM markets. In addition, Mosel Vitelic also intends to end DRAM manufacturing. In short, PSC will have more chances to occupy larger market share this year.

PSC also reiterated its plans to install more equipment in its foundry in order to manufacture more than 12 thousands of 12” wafers per month now.
