Qimonda AG on Monday announced the establishment of Qimonda Licensing LLC with offices in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The newly formed business entity will license Qimonda’s technologies to third parties, which may allow the latter to continue developing of technologies that Qimonda’s engineers used to work on.

Qimonda Licensing LLC`s U.S. based team will be responsible for the licensing and exploitation of Qimonda AG`s worldwide patent portfolio. Brian Prather, one of Qimonda Licensing LLC`s directors, has led Qimonda AG`s licensing efforts for several years with staff located in both the U.S. and Munich, Germany.

Qimonda AG, which is under administration of insolvency administrator Dr. Michael Jaffé, is the owner of one of the largest semiconductor patent portfolios in the world stemming from decades of worldwide research and development.

The decision to license technologies developed by Siemens Semiconductor, Infineon AG and finally Qimonda is a logical one since this establishes a relatively stable revenue stream to the bankrupt maker of dynamic random access memory. However, considering the fact that the most lucrative GDDR technologies have already been licensed to Elpida and Winbond, the potential of Qimonda Licensing should not be overestimated. Still, potentially Qimonda my license its industry’s only buried wordline DRAM process technology to companies, interested in using it for advanced DRAMs.

Qimonda initiated insolvency procedures in early 2009.
