SanDisk Corp. has introduced availability of the 256GB SanDisk Extreme Pro CompactFlash memory card, the world’s first high-capacity, high-performance CompactFlash card with the latest video performance guarantee (VPG-65) specification. The card offers extreme performance and is optimized for recording of ultra HD 4K video. But the speed comes at a price.

The card delivers minimum sustained write speeds of 65MB/s, optimized to capture 4K (3840*2160) and full HD (1920*1080) video. The 256GB SanDisk Extreme Pro CompactFlash card has transfer speeds of up to 160MB/s (which exceeds performance of XQD memory cards) and delivers fast shot speeds of up to 140MB/s for advanced functions such as fast action and continuous burst mode shots.

SanDisk Extreme Pro memory cards are designed for professionals and are backed by a lifetime limited warranty. The cards are durability tested, include RTV silicone coating inside for added protection against shock and vibration, and perform in extreme temperatures from minus 13 degrees Fahrenheit to 185 degrees Fahrenheit. The cards also include a one year downloadable offer for RescuePRO media recovery software, which lets photographers recover their images in case of accidental deletion.

To coincide with the launch of the 256GB SanDisk Extreme Pro CompactFlash card, SanDisk is increasing the speed across each capacity of the SanDisk Extreme Pro CompactFlash line. The other SanDisk Extreme Pro CompactFlash cards, available in capacities of 16GB, 32GB, 64GB and 128GB, will now feature read speeds of up to 160MB/s and write speeds of up to 150MB/s, as well as the same VPG as the 256GB card.

SanDisk Extreme Pro CompactFlash cards are available in capacities of 16GB, 32GB, 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB, and are shipping worldwide now with MSRPs of $219.99 to $1809.99.

Are memory cards and SSDs physically different technologies or is it just the much smaller sizes that make memory cards so much slower and more expensive over their SSD equivalent?

You can pick up a good, fast, cheap 250GB SSD for sub $/€/£150 that could record 4k at 120fps without breaking a sweat!

They both use NAND, but focus on different things. SSD is focused on random read speed (area where traditional HDD sucks). Memory card on the other hand is focused on sequential read and write speed, a speed that matters when recording video.

SSD will be slower than a memory card designed to record video.

I cannot imagine how SSD that is chocked by SATA 300 interface would be slower than 160MB/s.

Funny thing is that "4K" in this context means 4KB, not HD 4K video.
Whole test does not prove trumpet-205's statements.
Sequential write speed of worst SSD in this test is 404,7 MB/s.
