Super Talent, a popular supplier of advanced dynamic random access memory (DRAM) modules and flash-based products, said this week that it had signed and agreement with Paramount Pictures to produce movie-themed USB flash memory drives. The first products of the kind will be “The Godfather” products due shortly. But will the devices get popular?
“The introduction of movie-themed USB drives marks the beginning of a new era for the Flash industry. These drives will capture the spirit of ‘The Godfather,’ and will be a sure hit with millions of Don Corleone fans,” said Joe James, Super Talent Director of Marketing.
The Godfather USB flash drives, which are due this month, will be preloaded with memorable quotes and still photos from the feature film. Additional new models based on “The Godfather” theme will follow in 2009. At least initially, the drives will not contain the movie itself, which, on the one hand, means that they will not be very expensive, but on the other hand, this may disappoint fans of the popular movie title.
Earlier this year PNY and Sony agreed to distribute digital copy of “The Ghostbusters” movie on PNY flash drives, which is why the movie-themed USB drives are hardly something new. Unfortunately, PNY’s “The Ghostbusters” drives were rather expensive and could hardly become popular amid global economic meltdown. Alternatively, since Super Talent’s “The Godfather” drives do not come with movie itself, quite some end-users may get them in addition to an optical disc with the title that they purchase as a gift.
“’The Godfather’ is one of the most iconic Hollywood films ever, and is a fitting property to help launch this new product category in the licensing industry. We are very excited to be working with Super Talent on this innovative product launch,” said Michael Corcoran, president of Paramount Consumer Products and Recreation Group.
