ATI, graphics products group of Advanced Micro Devices, has finally published specifications of the Mobility Radeon X1900, a chip which has been unveiled by such producers of high-end gaming systems as Alienware and Fujitsu-Siemens. Apparently, the chip is a special version of the Radeon X1950 Pro, code-named RV570.

Mobility Radeon X1900 is made using 80nm process technology of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp., has 36 pixel shader processors, 8 vertex shader processors, 256-bit memory interface and PCI Express x16 bus interface. The chip fully supports DirectX 9.0 shader model 3.0, Avivo and PowerPlay 6.0 technologies.

AMD does not disclose clock-speeds for the Mobility Radeon X1900 claiming that they depend on actual notebook’s implementation. Power consumption of fully-fledged Radeon X1950 Pro graphics card is around 65W, about two times higher compared to modern mobile central processing units. Power and thermal envelopes of the Mobility Radeon X1900 are unclear.

Even though the market of high-performance mobile computers for gamers is relatively small, it is highly profitable and so far Nvidia has been enjoying the lead over AMD/ATI Technologies here. Up to now the fastest mobile graphics chip the graphics processor developer could offer was Mobility Radeon X1800 XT, which has 16 pixel processors, 8 vertex processor and 550MHz clock-speed. Technical specs of the recently unveiled GeForce Go 7950 GTX are close to those of pre-overclocked GeForce 7900 GT graphics boards for desktops, which usually either deliver equal performance with desktop Radeon X1800 XT (625MHz core-clock), or outperform the rival tangibly, according to an X-bit labs review. The Mobility Radeon X1900 with its 36 pixel shader processors and 8 vertex shader processors could outperform the model Go 7950 GTX.

Currently only Alienware and Fujitsu Siemens offer Mobility Radeon X1900 technology.
