Intel. Corp., the wold’s largest maker of microprocessors, plans to speed up the launch of it new microprocessor aimed at netbooks. The release of the new chip will be accompanied by the commercial launch of the new low-end computing platform.

Intel Atom N280 processor works at 1.66GHz and uses 667MHz processor system bus as well as Intel GN40 core-logic, a special version of Intel 4-series chipsets with DirectX 10-class integrated graphics core and new input/output controller.

The new Intel Atom platform featuring GN40 chipset is likely to offer a balance between modern functionality, low power consumption as well as price. Unfortunately, there are no thermal specifications for Intel GN40 available, but its close relative, Intel GL40, consumes up to 12W, which is rather high, hence, new generation netbooks will need to have more capacious batteries.

The Atom N280 bundled with GN40 chipset will be available for US$60-65 in thousand unit-tray quantities, the sources indicated, the DigiTimes indicated.
