High-performance mobile computers aimed at gamers and multimedia fans are not new to the market: there are notebooks with two graphics processing units, extreme edition microprocessors, high-quality audio and Blu-ray optical disc drives. In a bid to further close the gap between desktops and notebooks, HP and Wistron are working on a laptop with stereoscopic 3D screen.

Wistron, a large contract maker of mobile personal computers, has developed a notebook with 120Hz screen, which is something needed in order to implement Nvidia Corp.’s GeForce 3D Vision stereoscopic 3D technology for enhancing experience of 3D video games. The world’s first notebook supporting GeForce 3D Vision technology will be available already in late Q2 2009, in time for summer holidays, reports Commercial Times news-paper (which article was partly translated by DigiTimes web-site).

Nvidia GeForce 3D Vision technology requires monitor with 120Hz refresh rate, a special transmitter, shutter glasses as well as Nvidia GeForce graphics processing unit. Thanks to special enhancements from the driver, almost any video game can be enhanced with stereoscopic 3D effect, providing more immersive gameplay and entertainment.

Other specifications of HP notebook with GeForce 3D Vision support are not known at this point, but considering positioning of the machine it is highly likely that the laptop will come with at least 17” screen, high-performance Intel Core 2 microprocessor and so on.

Hewlett-Packard is not very well-known for machines aimed at gamers, therefore, it is likely that the company will sell its high-end notebook under its Voodoo brand, which is rather popular among consumers of high-end boutique personal computers.
