Intel Corp. has been talking about x86-based smartphones for several years now, however, the first-generation Intel Atom processors was too hot and too power consuming for handsets. At Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada, Intel demonstrated the world’s first smartphone featuring code-named Moorestown platform with Atom central processing engine.

Paul Otellini, chief executive officer of Intel, showed how multi-tasking capabilities combined with new user interfaces are creating exciting new applications for smartphones today. This included the world's first demonstration of the LG Electronics GW990 smartphone to help demonstrate the performance and software compatibility of "Moorestown”, Intel's next-generation platform for handhelds and smartphones. LG GW990 sports 5” screen with multi-touch capability, two integrated cameras and high-definition video playback capability, but the main advantage of LG GW990 is multi-tasking.

The head of the world’s largest chipmaker also showcased a smartphone reference design from Aava Mobile and a tablet reference design from OpenPeak, both based on the Moorestown platform.

“Moorestown" is scheduled to launch during the first half of the year with devices coming to market in the second half,” said Mr. Otellini.

Moorestown comprises of a system on a chip, code-named “Lincroft”, which integrates the 45nm processor, graphics, memory controller and video encode/decode onto a single chip and an I/O hub codenamed “Langwell”, which supports a range of I/O ports to connect with wireless, storage, and display components in addition to incorporating several board level functions.
