Touch-sensitive screens are nothing new. In the handset world they first emerged on personal digital assistants back in the nineties and then were installed into Apple iPhone instead of keyboard. While the latter still has a number of advantages, chief executive officer of Motorola claims that in the future the majority of Motorola phones will use multi-touch screens instead of keypads.

“I think you will see us deliver multi-touch in the majority of our devices going forward. There’s a complex set of factors, not all of them technical. But I think you will see us being proactive on multi-touch because the user feedback on multi-touch is very good,” said Sanjay Jha, chief executive officer of Motorola, in an interview with Laptop Magazine.

Touch-sensing screens allow mobile phone makers to create models with large screens without increasing the size of handsets on general. Since more and more consumers use their phones not only for talking, but for Internet browsing, playing or watching videos, large screens become compulsory to address such needs.

Nevertheless, hardware keyboards allow users to utilize their phones without even looking at keys, a crucial feature for those, who have certain disabilities. Besides, phones with keypads are naturally better for usage in rural areas or extreme conditions.

Usually phones with touch-sensitive screens do not feature keyboards, hence, from the words of Mr. Jha it can be understood that the majority of future Motorola phones will lack keypads.
