Apple today announced that it sold its one millionth iPad on Friday, just 28 days after its launch on April 3. While the success of the device is undisputable, it should be noted that Apple has been taking pre-orders on iPad for quite a while now and it actually took more than 28 days to sell the systems.

“One million iPads in 28 days—that’s less than half of the 74 days it took to achieve this milestone with iPhone. Demand continues to exceed supply and we’re working hard to get this magical product into the hands of even more customers,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s chief executive officer.

iPad users have already downloaded over 12 million apps from the App Store and over 1.5 million ebooks from the new iBookstore.

Considering the fact that Apple has a huge fan base and the fact that the iPad is indeed an interesting product to use, it is hardly surprising that it quickly became popular on the market. However, it remains to be seen whether the device will continue to remain a bestseller after people discover its drawbacks. Although Apple is known for successful products, there is a number of devices that are not exactly popular in its portfolio, e.g., Apple TV, Mac mini or iPod shuffle.

At present Apple ships three iPad models: 16GB, 32GB and 64 GB for suggested retail price of $499, $599 and $699, respectively. Initially, Apple promised to start shipping non-3G models immediately worldwide in late March, but had to limit the launch to the U.S. only and delay it by several days. The Wi-Fi + 3G models of iPad are delayed to late April in the U.S. and will cost $629 for the 16GB model, $729 for the 32GB model and $829 for the 64GB model.
