At the Intel Developer Forum 2010 the world's largest maker of microprocessors, outlined plans to streamline development of system-on-chip (SoC) products based on Atom microprocessor. The company plans to address many new markets with such SoCs, in particular car entertainment, Internet phones, and smart grid devices.

During trade-show, Intel formally introduced code-named “Tunnel Creek” processor, which is a new Intel Atom E600 SoC processor series developed specifically for embedded applications such as in-vehicle infotainment systems for cars, smart grid devices and IP media phones. The SoC integrates additional capabilities onto the chip and features a PCI Express controller in order to make it easier to design customized products using virtually any chips with PCIe interconnection. According to Intel, OKI Semiconductor, Realtek Semiconductor and STMicroelectronics will offer interconnect chipsets for Tunnel Creek chips.

Doug Davis, vice president and general manager of embedded and communications group at Intel, went on to unveil details of an upcoming new configurable Atom processor, code-named Stellarton. The  processor consists of the Atom E600 processor paired with an Altera FPGA on a multi-chip package; which provides additional flexibility for customers who want to incorporate proprietary I/O or acceleration and enabling developers to differentiate their designs by reacting quickly to changing requirements.

The Atom E600-series, as well as an Intel platform controller hub  (PCH) EG20T that meets the design requirements of embedded segments including IVI, smart  grid devices, media phones, industrial and home automation will be available to customers later this year. The Intel Atom processors range from $19-$85 in quantities of 1000, and the PCH is $9  in quantities of 1000.
