At a special event at its headquarters in Cupertino, California, Apple on Tuesday introduced its new generation of smartphones, the iPhone 4S. The new device boasts similar "retina" screen, dual-core A5 microprocessor that offers higher-performance graphics and other improvements, new high-def camera, sports higher data transfer rates as well as longer battery life.

Apple’s fifth generation iPhone sports similar design as the fourth generation one: it is made of glass and steel and sports the same 3.5” screen with 960*640 retina display. But while the novelty is similar from the outside, it is completely different inside as it sports brand-new Apple A5 system-on-chip with two ARM Cortex-A9 cores with NEON SIMD accelerators, dual core PowerVR SGX543MP2 graphics adapter and some other advantages. Thanks to substantially improved compute performance of the A5 versus the A4, Apple managed to squeeze substantially more demanding software-based functionality.

iPhone 4S comes with iOS 5 mobile operating system, which includes over 200 new features including Notification Center, an innovative way to easily view and manage notifications in one place without interruption and iMessage, a new messaging service that lets you easily send text messages, photos and videos between all iOS 5 users. iOS 5 will also be available as a free software update for iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS customers allowing them to experience its new features.

“iPhone 4S plus iOS 5 plus iCloud is a breakthrough combination that makes the iPhone 4S the best iPhone ever,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide product marketing.

iPhone 4S also introduces Siri, an intelligent assistant that helps customers to get things done just by asking. Siri understands context allowing to speak naturally when asking it questions. Siri helps to make calls, send text messages or email, schedule meetings and reminders, make notes, search the Internet, find local businesses, get directions and more. Users can also get answers, find facts and even perform complex calculations just by asking.

The Apple iPhone 4S supports HSDPA technology and features up to 14.4Mb/s download speed and up to 5.8Mb/s upload speed. What is more important for those, who travel a lot is support of auad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, quad-band UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA and dual-band CDMA/EV-DO by the iPhone 4S.

Another important update that was obtained by the iPhone 4S is integrated camera. Despite being thin, the novelty packs an backside illuminated CMOS 8MP sensor with 3264*2448 resolution and a proprietary five element lens. The camera also sports a larger f/2.4 aperture and an advanced hybrid IR filter that produce sharper, brighter and more accurate images. iPhone 4S can also now record video in full 1080p HD resolution and with the new video image stabilization feature. Other iPhone 4S video camera improvements include increased sensitivity, sharpness and an increased ability to capture video in low light conditions.

New features in the Camera and Photos apps give instant access to the camera right from the lock screen, and users can also use the volume-up button to quickly snap a photo. The new Photos app allows crop, rotate, enhance and remove red-eye, and organize photos into albums right on the device to share them on the go. New iOS 5 features include built-in Twitter integration and iMessage.

If it's "all about the speed" then why doesn't it support a 4G LTE network? Apple is really falling behind the curve.

Actually.. "its all about we can't compete, sorry".. 4S is a fart compared to the (8month old) Galaxy S2 let alone the forth coming Nexus Prime let alone the, oh, 2-3 month Android h/w upgrade/refresh cycle to Apple's by-gone era 1 year refresh.. Har har.. This was Apple's AMD moment where they started the fall-back compared to the competition.
