Google said on Tuesday that over 700 thousand of new devices - smartphones and tablets - powered by Google Android operating system are activated every day.

"There are now over 700 000 Android devices activated every day. For those wondering, we count each device only once (i.e., we don't count re-sold devices), and 'activations' means you go into a store, buy a device, put it on the network by subscribing to a wireless service," said Andy Rubin, senior vice president of mobile at Google, over at Google+ social network.

Thanks to the fact that Google Android platform is adopted by loads of various devices made by different manufacturers, market share of the operating system is not only growing, but its pace of growth remains very strong. According to many market observers, Android is on-track to become a de-facto leading operating system for mobile devices, or the next Windows.

It is unknown how many Apple iOS-based devices are activated daily, but based on sales of iOS devices reported by the company, there are between 250 and 300+ thousand of iOS-based products switched on every day.

Microsoft Corp. remains extremely tight-lipped over the number of Windows Phone-based devices sold or activated daily.
