Intel Corp. on Tuesday introduced Studybook, a ruggedized, purpose-built tablet for education, that provides mobility for students, comes with Intel Learning Series (Intel LS) software suite and supports unique classroom-ready features. The device is aimed to substitute paperbooks and enable new ways of education.

Intel Studybook is based on Atom Z650 system-on-chip (one core with Hyper-Threadink, 1.20GHz clock-speed, 512KB cache, 3W TDP), 7" capacitive touch screen (1024*600 resolution) and Microsoft Windows 7 or Google Android 3.0 "Honeycomb" operating system. The tablet is equipped with 4GB/8GB/16GB/32GB flash storage, 1GB DDR2 memory, 0.3MP front and 2.0MP rear cameras, microphone, speaker, accelerometer, light sensor, USB, microSD, miniHDMI, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, optional 3G and Bluetooth as well as other features. The exact configuration can be changed in accordance with actual requirements.

The education software of Studybook includes classroom management, LabCam applications that support scientific enquiry, and an optimized e-reader. The collaboration software has a user-friendly interface which enables teachers and students to collaborate in the classroom for improved learning efficiency.

The rugged tablet reference design is constructed from a single piece of plastic and includes shock-absorbers around the screen. It is designed to withstand accidental drops from a standard student desk and is also water- and dust- resistant. Young students, often owners of slippery fingers can learn and have fun in and out of the classroom with reduced stress for parents and teachers concerned about damage.

The hardware and software elements of an Intel Studybook have been piloted in more than 2000 classrooms in 36 countries. Its infrastructure is tailored to individual geographies in terms of content, cultural relevance, and language.
